Ever wondered if Christmas movies and whiskey have more in common than you'd think? Join us on a whimsical journey where we fondly recall the adrenaline of 90s action flicks like "Speed" before diving into the spirited world of whiskey. Discover why Sobro Spirits in Indianapolis has become our go-to haunt for its eclectic whiskey selection, and laugh with us as we try to make sense of a peculiar whiskey aroma that has us comparing it to tranquilizers. It's a spirited conversation that will leave you chuckling and contemplating your next whiskey tasting adventure.
Our exploration doesn't stop there! Picture a pie mutant born from the goo of apple, pumpkin, and pecan pies, with a sugary crust to match. That's exactly how we felt as we tasted a uniquely flavored beverage from the Old Hamer Distillery. We share tales of our visits to their showroom and the thrill of finding benchmark bottles without breaking the bank. With our tongues firmly in our cheeks, we chat about potential collaborations with these local whiskey wizards and reminisce about our adventures in uncovering these hidden whiskey gems.
As the holiday season draws near, our attention shifts to the magic of Christmas movies. From the undeniable holiday spirit of "The Santa Clause" to debates over whether "Die Hard" belongs on your Christmas watchlist, we stroll down memory lane. We share heartwarming childhood tales, like dressing up as Santa Claus, and delight in the quirky charm of claymation classics and the jazz-fueled nostalgia of "A Charlie Brown Christmas." With a playful nod to Hallmark's holiday movie potential, we promise a jolly good time filled with laughter, nostalgia, and maybe a few more glasses of whiskey.

See what happened was. What happened was, see what happened was. And I said, I said, I said oh, and I know other topics. I know other topics we could talk about. We're rolling, though. So we're like in the show already and I'm like we didn't do a show before the show Speed. What we did was, oh, speed, speed was a good movie, did you see? I used to love Speed. Did I see Speed With Keanu Reeves back in the day and Sandra Bullock and Sandra Bullock Gosh? I don't think. So what? Oh, those are good movies. I don't think I've seen Speed.
Speaker 1:We gotta watch Speed 2. I would watch religiously, really. Yeah, it didn't even have Ke first one. Are you kidding me? I memorized really. He loved. Yes, okay, it was fantastic. I love speed too. It was a great movie.
Speaker 1:Speed, too, was garbage, was on a boat. Speed was exactly it was on a boat. Who cares speeds on a bus, speeds on a bus, and like, how fast does a boat go that we're calling it the bus go? Uh, I get stopped. That was the point all the time. That was the point. It had to keep going. 55 miles an hour. It's not even fast. You know what isn't even fast? These episodes Right, because they take forever Buckle in listeners.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we've got at least 29. Nobody says buckle in, it's buckle up, oh, buckle down, you don't buckle in, you buckle down. Though you don't buckle in, you buckle down. Though you don't buckle down, you do, you could. I guess you could Strap in folks. Ew, no, it's okay.
Speaker 1:Welcome to Whiskey Bits With Matt and Phil, where we sip on everyday whiskeys and find the funny in our everyday lives. Alright, today we have one that I know you've been super excited about. I asked if you want to introduce you, if you wanted to introduce this one. You said I have no idea what it is, I don't even know, but you've been so excited about it Cause I tried it and it was really good. Where so this was? I cracked this just moments ago, right, this was in the pre-show. We didn't record.
Speaker 1:This is from Sobro Spirits in Indianapolis. Yep, and the shout out to those guys. I'm sure we're going to have them on at some point. We're going to go down there, because I'm there all the time. Shout out to Sobro, sobro, and I don't know what Sobro means, but they are super generous people, amazing prices. If you're in Indianapolis, you just got to check them out. I go there all the time because the in-laws live there and so whenever now, since we've started this, whenever I'm in Indy, I go to Sobro. Go to Sobro, it just sounds good.
Speaker 1:But they sample stuff Like literally just like here here's a half an it's and so this was one of the ones. So this is one of their picks. Uh-huh, it looks like yeah, and so this comes from the old hammer distillery. From what I'm reading, I don't know if it's hammer, I think it's hammer, old hammer. Oh, you're right, there's only one m. Yeah, there's no, it's not like mc hammer, thank you, thank you. This is like me trying to pronounce cocoa, cocoa, cocoa, cocoa, cocoa. Phil, I just, I can't have you ever had chocolate. That was me having the dumbs. I had the stupids that day.
Speaker 1:Resurrected by West Fork. Whiskey is Okay, it is Old Hamer, established 1825. Oh, wow, that is old. This is a straight bourbon whiskey. This is a single barrel pick from Sobro Spirits Wine, craft Beer, like you mentioned out in Indianapolis.
Speaker 1:And let me tell you the guy that picks it. They do a good job, do they? Yeah, do you remember his name? Uh, yes, I shouldn't. The guy that picks it. They do a good job. Do that? Yeah, like they're, what's it? Do you remember his name? Uh, yes, I shouldn't have put you on the spot, gosh, how dare you? No, okay, remind that all back. Yeah, of course I do. I'm not gonna say it, for you know, the guy that picks this stuff is he's amazing, yes, he's amazing, that's good. But they, they do a good job. Uh, I like their palette, yeah, his, his palette Amazing. Yes, he's amazing, that's good. But they, they do a good job. Uh, I like their palette, yeah, his, his palette. I don't know it's good, huh, yeah, well, I don't know his specific, I don't have experience with his palette. Like, I'm not like all up in his palette, yeah, but I'm, like, I can appreciate the wisdom that comes from the palette. Right, palate, right, I haven't partaken in the palate. That'd just be weird, that would be strange. It'd be like so, bro, you know, continue. Sorry, I think you need a tranquilizer. I think you need. Do I? All? Right, I'm gonna do it. I think you should. I do it. Yes, you should, you went. It'd be like so, bro, like, as if we're not talking about so, bro, you're're absolutely hitting that. Guys, I'm taking a shot and while he does that, we'll come back to the face in a second. I'm going to shake it, though he did pick out one that's 126 proof 63%. This is barrel. Sobro B is in Bravo. S is in Sierra B is in Bravo 6.
Speaker 1:Why does it smell like a? It smells like feet, doesn't it? It does? Yeah, it's really good.
Speaker 1:West Fork Whiskey from Indianapolis, indiana. So this liquor store is in Indiana, the West Fork Liquor is also in, or West Fork excuse me, distillery whiskey is also in. Can I smell it? It smelled like feet, but I don't know if it's the tap. Nope, it's not bad. It's not bad. It doesn't smell like feet, it smells like. It doesn't smell like good whiskey, but it smells like whiskey. It's okay. Oh, you're drinking it too. It's not bad. You know what that is? That's Misery Loves Company, right there. It's not great. It's not great, it's just not good.
Speaker 1:I wouldn't, dad, joke loading. Do we have water to wash that down with? Oh, we didn't sniff our coffee. So this, I remember trying it. Old Hamer coffee. So this, uh, I remember trying old hamer, old hamer, I remember trying it was really good, and they have, I think, obviously several different ones. Yeah, and I've seen it in stores around here. Yeah, I've seen it too. Yeah, so, not this label, but yeah, not that label, but this one.
Speaker 1:I wish it's been a while. I mean, I, I got it a while ago. Yeah, it's been like maybe three or four months. Do you remember tasting notes? I wouldn't, no, I just remember going, wow, this is really good. And I remember talking about it a lot.
Speaker 1:And so, having that experience, I was like I gotta bring this on the show. I need Phil to taste it. I can't wait. You're gonna wait at least a half second more and go. I'm going to smell it first. You're going to smell it first. Yeah, oh, my goodness, that does smell really good.
Speaker 1:What is that? Is that coconut cream pie? You know what? That's really funny. You should say that I was going to say like no tapioca, it's tapioca. It definitely smells like a pudding. There's definitely a pudding in's freaking tapioca pudding right there. Oh my gosh, oh, that's so good, it smells. So it smells like tapioca pudding. Yeah, well, stamp of approval. Wow, good, good color. A little cinnamon on that. Um, little cinnamon and and cream, like what.
Speaker 1:What does tapioca taste like? Like just by itself? Well, uh, I think there is a cinnamon kind of thing that you have in tapioca. It's almost like vanilla bean cinnamon. Yeah, it's like kind of a rice pudding kind of thing. I love tapioca, I love it, it's one of my favorites.
Speaker 1:It is of all the pud, the puddings in all the world, of all the puddings which we're not talking about. The election, right, oh, that's so long ago. That was like we're in December, phil, but it feels like it's Like so last month, it's over a month ago, oh, my gosh, I'm so excited, so much we're not talking about it. America, that's so much we're not talking about it. America, that's right, you know, I get like, um, I get, I get a spicy, like, I get like an all spice or or like a pumpkin spice type, and that it's not pumpkin spice, it's like, um, it's like the spices that you would put into a pumpkin pie clove, all spice, right, right, nutmeg, right, I think it's nutmeg.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that might. Yep, I think you're picking up nutmeg for sure. Yeah, just a warm, like kind of a warm spicy, a warm nutmeg. I feel like, if we could, we insert Family Guy. Come on, lois, come on, it's a warm nutmeg, it's more nutmeg, it's a warm nutmeg Peanut. Shut up, meg. Shut up, meg.
Speaker 1:Peter, I think you're a little crazy. Oh, yes, I'm going to stab you in the face in the middle of the night. Yes, that's right, you're a crazy baby. Giggity, giggity. All right, peter, I think I like you. That's his neighbor. Dang it, bobby. That's a whole other show.
Speaker 1:Impressions over Get down. Okay, there we. Dang it, bobby. That's a whole other show. Impressions Over Get down. Okay, there we go. Reset. You got to reset with the. I can't See, I can't do Homer, I can't do Homer. My favorite is Professor Frank Frank. What's that, professor Frank? Well, I Is that from. It's a Simpsons. Simpsons, yeah, yeah, okay. But we can't do Homer. We can do Hamer, old Hamer, oh, I think you're. That's not even. No, that's too good. That's good, that's a pretty good one, though that was really close. I mean Homer Hamer, I'm surprised to take a sip off of that when I made up a knock-knock joke off the top of my head, I don't even have any recollection of that.
Speaker 1:Did you do that this episode or the last one? No, it was a few episodes ago. I don't even remember it was knock-knock. Who's there? Yo, yo-ho, yo-hoo. I didn't even do it right. Should we start over Freaking pirate over here? I messed it up too. You did yeah, okay, start over. Okay, knock, knock, who's there? Yeah, yahoo, it's just me. You don't need to be that excited. What if I was like yahoo? I said yo, and you said yahoo? I said yo-ho.
Speaker 1:Like a bottle of rum, like a pirate Arr, arr, matey, are we going to get to the whiskey? I'm going to risk another dad joke, okay, are you familiar with pirates and their favorite letter? Is it arr? No, it's the C. My daughter told me that one. That should be kid joke loading, because my daughter told me that one, did she? No, it's the C. Which one? Stella, she doesn't have a lisp, but I added that for effect. That was good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, dude, nutmeg. All right, let's go for it. Nutmeg, tapioca. I've already tasted this, but I'm going to do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, mmm, mmm. Oh, my gosh, it's like a mix, like if you were to put Woo, woo, I don't. This tastes like. This tastes like. This tastes like Is it an amalgulation, amalgamation?
Speaker 1:Is that what I said? An amalgam, an amalgam, an amalgam, amalg, amalgamation. It's not a countryil. Uh, okay, this is like a series.
Speaker 1:This is like a combination, uh-huh, of all of my favorite pies. Oh, this, like this, has hints of apple pie, uh-huh, hints of pumpkin pie, with that nutmeg uh-huh, which I hate and you don't like. Well, I don't like nutmeg. No, I don't like, I don't. I love all those things like smelling them and whatever. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of just pumpkin pie on its own. Oh, I like you gotta put, like pecans and brown sugar, okay, sure, but but not pumpkin. What I'm saying is like an amalgamation Amalgamation Of pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie.
Speaker 1:Like I get, like some of the pecan. It's a pie mutant, it just it tastes very good. If a pie fell in ooze Like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this is what would come out of it. Yeah, but like there's even the you know, the crust almost has, like you know, has that kind of flaky, flowery type of and some of that burnt kind of sugar stuff on it. Yes, yeah, there's just a ton of.
Speaker 1:I love this, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, I love this. I'm trying to tell you Every week. I'm like, hey, you gonna do this one. Like, eh, how good can it be? It's old Hamer, it's old Hamer, old Hama, old Hama, poor thing. Get to the shop.
Speaker 1:Old Hama, poor thing, is just sitting back on the barrel all this time and behind, you know, we put it behind Bull Run, which you know Bull Run is good. Look, that's only based on size of bottle, right? Well, you know, you want the taller ones in the back. Yeah, you want the taller ones in the back so you can see the neck, so you can see the little ones. Yeah, you got to see that. Yeah, like in high school, taking a class picture, you put the tall kid in the back with a freaking long neck, right, because you're like, ah, they can't have you up front. Yeah, because then we wouldn't see anybody. You wouldn't see anybody because your neck's in the way. Right, yeah, same thing with this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you like it Really good, it's good. I mean, I'm kind.
Speaker 1:No, I think I bought that one. This is all. Did I buy that one? I did buy that one, yeah, cause I would have taken it home by now. Well, you know, these are one of the folks that I want to have on the show next year. This would be great, yeah, and they have a beautiful.
Speaker 1:Well, first of all, they do raffles. You buy a bottle, you get a raffle ticket every week, every month, anyways, but they have, like this really cool showroom and they have bottles. I mean they have almost everything. Yeah, boats, a bottle, like they have almost everything. They allocated stuff. I mean they got it all.
Speaker 1:Do they do tastings of these things? I believe that if they have it, they do tastings of a lot of stuff. Could we go in and buy a half ounce of whatever they have on the shelf there? Maybe? Maybe if they do an event, I don't know, okay, but they have a nice show. Maybe maybe if they do an event. I don't know, okay, like, like the, but they have a nice showroom. Oh, it's, here's all the allocated. It would be like if we were going to build a set for the podcast it. I would just be like let's just duplicate what they have because it's really nice. Yeah, um, and it's a separate space. They do events and stuff in there, but yeah, they're. Uh, I'm gonna tag them on this, on this. This is like a shout out. This is like a. They're not a guest, but they kind of are A future guest. Yeah, they're going to be. Yeah, good guys over there.
Speaker 1:Yeah, when you told me about this place, I'm at a loss of words, or you're having a stroke. I'm not having a stroke. How many fingers are on my foot. None, good For a second I forgot their toes. Maybe I'm having a stroke. Am I having a stroke? No, that's electrocuted. I don't know what a stroke is. I've been electrocuted many times, have you? Maybe that's why you don't realize that toes are not fingers. That's why I have short-term memory problems and I don't know the difference between toes and fingers, or where Pennsylvania is. Continue, no, you know where it is. Was I talking? Was it a state or a city? Right, yeah, state city.
Speaker 1:No, when you told me about Sobro, you took a ton of pictures of all the different things. Yeah, I was pointing out like, hey, what's that one? Oh, benchmark. That's where you got all the benchmarks. Remember, we got, like you did, like I had you looking for all the benchmarks. Yeah, they were like $5. What was crazy was the week that they were still reasonable. But I was glad that you bought what you bought. They were really cheap. But that's the thing. It's got to be a state thing. It's just a matter of well.
Speaker 1:First of all, up until maybe that week, you couldn't find it too far north of Indianapolis. Benchmark was, benchmark is a. You know just, I know we're not talking about Benchmark. Oh, my goodness, they're talking about something else. Oh, what are you going to do? It's a Buffalo Trace product, but it's one of their, you know. So it is a Buffalo Trace product, but they didn't distribute it to everywhere in the country and so when they had cases on cases Exactly, I mean it was ridiculous you wouldn't be able to find that in the Chicagoland area. You'd have to go down a little bit further south to find it. So when you were like like Indianapolis has it, I was there, did I tell you that Right, yeah, no, no, when. Right, yeah, no, when. When I was there, that's good, that's good, yeah, so that was that same week.
Speaker 1:But you were telling me about that place and I'm really excited to meet with those guys. I think we're going to do one. I think it's going to be one of our first. We bring our stuff there and film there. Yeah, that would be awesome to film on that set. That's my dream with it there and film there. Yeah, that would be awesome to film in that, on that set. That would be that's my dream with it is like yeah, I think so. Like yeah, I see a place like that. I'm like. I mean, it's like we have journeyman distillery that I was at, that they're interested. And you look at it, you're like, yes, yeah, we need to come film here.
Speaker 1:A few episodes ago, I think, was that the one we did um, yeah, the field rye, oh, that's so good. And then we don't want to take away from the old. No, I mean honestly, like there's a lot of stuff happening in Indy and this being one of them, yeah, and the fact that this one even comes from there, you're like, okay, I mean I guess you're getting closer to Kentucky and all that. But the corn, I mean, one of the top distillers and one of the distillers that produces the most amount of spirits within Illinois or within the US, is in just south of Indianapolis. Oh, really, what is it? Mgp? Oh, I didn't realize that's where they're at Indiana. Oh, there's a lot't realize that's where they're at. It's in Indiana.
Speaker 1:Oh, yeah, there's a lot of really good whiskey coming out of Indiana. Interesting, yeah, especially like the south, like Indiana, indianapolis and south of Indiana. Well, they got to be probably a big producer of the corns. Yep, I would imagine. You're so close to the bourbon trail at that point. You're so close to the bourbon trail. At that point You're like, hey, it's like right there, just bring the corn over. Hey, can you toss a cob over the line, the state line? Hey, remember, there's more than corn in Indiana. That's their slogan, that's their thing, right, is it still? I don't know, I don't know. It was when I was a kid. Oh, that's funny. That's good. Crystal Lake, a good place to live. Yeah, crystal Lake.
Speaker 1:You only come here to get murdered by Michael Myers, that's right. Yeah, not the actor either. Right, right, yeah, that'd be weird. Although he was in a movie I Married an Axe Murderer. Oh, that's kind of weird, that's true, but he wasn't the murderer in that one. Yeah, so that doesn't apply. He was a poet.
Speaker 1:Oddly enough, I've never seen that movie. I don't know. Well, I have seen the movie that we talked about earlier. We'll watch. I'll watch that one because I haven't seen it. And then you have to watch every Marvel movie. That's the trade-off.
Speaker 1:I thought we would go back to Speed 2. Or Speed 2. Which I will not watch. It was so good, it was awful. I don't think that guy's acting.
Speaker 1:I think this is the age difference between us. I was around for the original, you were around for the sequel. Heck, yes, I think that's about. You were probably my age when Speed came out, when you were enjoying Speed, whatever age that was, I was that age, enjoying Speed too, enjoying Speed too. And you were like this is the best movie ever, which I thought Speed was one of the best movies ever because it was just and I was like there's a one I don't know, I thought maybe two just was like, yeah, speed also, what was our topic going to be? What were we going to talk about?
Speaker 1:No, we were talking about movies. Oh, christmas movies. We're two weeks away from Christmas and we're like, of course we're talking about movies. I'm deep into watching Christmas movies. Stop. Favorite Christmas movie of all time oh my gosh, we can get to this real quick. Favorite Christmas movie oh, the Santa Claus Hands down. Why we're finally going to talk about this? Because when I was oh my gosh, we're going to have to make this a triple episode. Oh, yeah, when I was in third, fourth grade, you can wrap this up in seven minutes, can I? Oof, I can't even wrap a present in seven minutes. Okay, hey, that was a good one. No man can. No man can. When you were in seventh grade, thank you. When I was in, no, when I was like I don't know what grade, seventh, fourth grade or something. Okay, I used to Whenever the Santa Claus came out in 1991.
Speaker 1:I think is when it was. I think it was 1991. I would have been what? Six, I think it was later than that. Okay, by a lot 98. Whatever you If you were six hey Siri, I was 11 in 91. Okay, and you're significantly younger than me. Watch this Ready. Hey Siri, when did the Santa Claus come out? 1998.
Speaker 1:Santa Claus was formed in 1809. No, no, no, no. The Santa Claus came out in the mid-90s. It came out in 95, 96, somewhere in there. Yeah, whatever age I was, I loved that movie. Yeah, and I wanted to be Santa, right.
Speaker 1:So for Christmas that year I was at my mom's house. All I asked for, all I asked for that year, was a Santa Claus costume. Wow, and I got it Nice. And that Christmas Eve I dressed up in the costume. My mom gave it to me early and it's all on camera somewhere. Wait, wait, you have video. Oh, I have video of this somewhere. Do you have a picture of it Somewhere? How quickly can you get a picture of it? Uh, somewhere, how? How quickly can you do a picture of it? I don't know, I'll have to find it. I'll see if I can find it, my brother. But here's the thing, here's the picture. Oh, no, not all that work go ahead, okay. So I dressed up as santa gosh, well, I'm gonna actually try to find. You have to find it. I have to show my kids there. It is uh.
Speaker 1:But like I delivered the gifts under the tree and I went and woke up my siblings and there's like video footage because my stepdad filmed everything and it's like me waking up my little brothers and my little sister and they're all like angry because it's, you know, they're. It's like midnight, because we would spend christmas eve with my mom and and do the gifts at, like you know, christmas eve and then, yeah, the next day we go back to my dad's house. But anyways, I was convinced because I love, because I loved that movie so much, I thought tim allen was my dad. Wow, yeah, we talked about this. And yeah, yeah, no, no, who did I think the guy was that was at home, also my dad, right? I just thought maybe tim allen was, you know, also my dad, also your dad, because he was santa claus, right? Santa claus favorite. This guy is my stepdad, right? Yeah, yeah, which means I'm the heir to the throne of santa claus, right? So that's where I think, where my mind was at that age. That's awesome.
Speaker 1:Now, has it changed much? Not really, so you know, I might. For the Christmas episode, I may have to dress up like Santa Claus. I can't wait. I'm so excited In many ways. I can't wait. Maybe you could be Santa, or you could be my little elf. You could be Mrs Claus. No, can't have a bearded Mrs Claus. Look, I realize it's 2024, but that's where I draw the line. I mean, maybe you can't ruin it, I won't ruin it.
Speaker 1:What's your favorite Christmas movie? It's going to be a little controversial. Oh, it's actually a. It's going to be a little controversial, okay, oh, I little controversial. Okay, oh, oh, oh, I know what it is, you know what it is, I do, and you're gonna say it in three, two, one die hard. Yes, I knew it. Yeah, oh, it is absolutely. It's not a controversial, it's a fact.
Speaker 1:It's a christmas, it's a christmas movie. It's, it's it, uh, it is a. It's a really good movie. It is I. I don't know that I would necessarily like. It's a good christmas movie. It is celebrating christmas like you get the. Yes, it's so good, it's so good. What's the saying? It's not christmas until hans gruber falls off. That's right, that's right, that's right.
Speaker 1:Uh, when I was growing up though, before you know, we're talking like like I'm, or five, six, before diehard was released in 1989. I think we can get back. You're significantly older than us. Hey Siri, when was diehard released? 1980. She doesn't want to listen to you this way. No, that's your phone. That's why it doesn't like. Okay, hey Siri, when was diehard released? 1989.
Speaker 1:Diehard was released in 1988. 88. 88. Okay, that's enough. We don't need a book, we just wanted a quick date. We don't need any action stuff. Leave it to the British. She's Australian. Leave it to the Australian, leave it to the Aussies.
Speaker 1:You can't even beat an emu in a wall. Yeah, you can't even beat an emu in a wall. Yeah, you can't even beat an emu in a wall. So why are we asking you when? In 1988.
Speaker 1:So before 1988, I would say that my favorite Christmas movie was probably oh man, there's so many good ones, but it was probably it Came Upon a Midnight Clear. That's not a movie, that's a song. It came upon a midnight clear, like the little old guy. It Came Upon a Midnight. Clear Rooney, mickey Rooney, yeah, mickey Rooney, no, no, not Mickey. Yeah, mickey Rooney, yeah, the Santa Claus, the little tiny guy. Well, he's tiny as a person, but also in the claymations. Those are one of my favorites. That was one of my favorites when I was growing up and then obviously Die Hard has become my favorite Christmas movie as I've gotten older. But it was a great movie when I was eight, nine years old, whatever.
Speaker 1:So Die Hard came out when you were eight or nine. Pause, we're going to continue this, we're just going to stop. It's not heating up, I'm just going to start. So Die Hard came out when you were nine, yeah, eight or nine years old, something like that, depending on the time frame. I mean it probably was released in 88 into theaters.
Speaker 1:But like, didn't get to v8. I definitely did not. Like, as an eight-year-old I definitely wasn't in line to go see that at the. So like that's definitely something I saw on eight, I wouldn't put it past the parent at that time. So like I'm nine or ten when I first see die hard, right, uh, I wouldn't necessarily have said like, oh, that's my favorite Christmas movie at that point. No, now I can say that, but For sure, but the point being that, yeah, that would probably have been. It came upon me at Midnight.
Speaker 1:Clear was like, probably the one that I kind of went to, a bunch, a bunch, but like, even as recently as you know, I mean a Charlie Brown Christmas, yeah, you know, like the classic, I mean I would say Santa Claus and Die Hard are classics now, but like I really like a lot the claymation ones. Santa Claus is Coming to Town Year Without a Santa Claus, like the old, like I'm talking like what is it 19? Well, I mean Rudolph the Red-Nosed Re, like was it 19? Well, I mean, rudolph the red rose, reindeer was all claymation. Like frosty the snowman was mickey rooney was santa claus, and the claymations oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that makes sense, that makes sense, I like those a lot. The kids, like those I gotta tell you like, uh, my favorite soundtrack of all christmas, like I would say like, like, if we were to branch out into, because I wouldn't say that that movies is next necessarily the thing that I think of most around christmas, it's the music.
Speaker 1:Okay, oh, it's crosby holiday radio. Okay, that's my, that's my thing. For me it's don't say john mayer, freaking holloman. I will. It is vince gerald.
Speaker 1:I will end this podcast. It's Vince Giraldi, it's Vince Giraldi and then it's Vince Giraldi. I love it. There's no question about that one. Does he have a station on Pandora? You don't need it.
Speaker 1:If you just listen to Charlie Brown Christmas, the album on repeat, I could do that all year long. You know I was in Charlie Brown, I played Schroeder. I mean, do that all year long. You know I was in Charlie Brown, I played Schroeder. I mean, that's great that you played the piano. No, I did. Can I tell you this quick story? Did you play the piano? I did take piano lessons. I can play a few notes.
Speaker 1:Our friends, becca and Pedro, their house. That house was owned by another friend of mine, before they live there, before they live there, um, and there was a play when I was in high school. We were doing it's a good man, charlie brown, the guy who was playing schroeder. So we were going to do it at the local college. We're going to do the first act.
Speaker 1:I wasn't in the show, I was like somebody else in the show when we did it, but for this it was like a musical review thing. So we were just the first act at McHenry County College. The guy that was Schroeder couldn't do it, so they hired me. Now, you know, rachel, I do they hired and the lady that owned the house. They asked me to come in and that night, the night before, I learned the entire first act of it's a Good man, charlie Brown as Schroeder, and then went and performed it the next day. Wow, we were up for I don't even know how long. Wow, we were talking songs, music, blocking, choreography. Yeah, it was so good.
Speaker 1:So, yes, I love. What a pro. What a freaking pro. I mean just shower gifts. What a pro. What a freaking pro. I mean just shower gifts. What a pro. I know I'm just so talented. Yeah, or at least I was. I don't know I had such a good memory.
Speaker 1:Anyways, okay, christmas, charlie Brown. That's my experience. I love, love Charlie Brown. I like putting that one on, yeah, putting that one on, um, yeah, where do you stand with elf? I love elf, do you? Yeah, oh, yeah, okay, you don't like it, though I can tell it's. Uh, it's my wife's favorite. Really, it's the one. Oh well, duh on all the time. I love it. Yeah, it's great, it's, it's. I wouldn't.
Speaker 1:So home alone, like classic christmas vacation classic, those have, I mean, first of all, like even home alone, 2 of the traditional of the traditional christmas movies to me. I would, I'd probably say I could watch home alone over and over again. I also really, and we just I think I could do that. Yeah, oh for sure. Uh, so many like nostalgic memories come from, even feelings. Feelings, tastes, like the pizza, the Pepsi, like all that stuff, oh, yeah, yeah, it all just kind of like Wetting the bed, oh wait. No, for real, though. Yeah, while eating pizza. No, like cheese pizza, tarantulas crawling in your face, bb guns yeah, dude. So like All of it.
Speaker 1:I don't know how to say the magazine, but there's a magazine in it. I never did get one of those. What were we talking about? No Christmas movies, but a Christmas story. Very good, love it. And my stepdad actually is from Ohio, mm-hmm. Cleveland, yeah, and so he and my mom went and saw the house and all that, but it's in cleveland. But we just that was the first one we started this year. So every year I'm like, oh, we're gonna do like a movie a day for december. It never, ever happens, but we just start now.
Speaker 1:I'm obsessed. So like, I already got the lights up like two weeks ago and they look beautiful, by the way they do. I got to tell you. But they're the LEDs. I don't really like the blue-ish, I got to tell you. I love them. You love them, I love them. I put more. I have 2,300 Italian imported Twinkle Lights. 50 seconds. Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah, that's awesome. So 2300 this year's the most I've ever had. Yeah, that's 23 boxes imported italian twinkle lights. Um, I'm getting there. By the time I'm 60, I'm gonna have all.
Speaker 1:It'll be a griswold christmas, the griswold family christmas, family christmas. That has to be okay. Can we? Can we agree that that is the most quotable christmas movie of all time? Sure is, yes, national lampoon, that next to home alone. Keep the change. You filled the animal like home alone I'm. But I'm still to say it's because there are so many, there's so many. It was full. Yeah, I really want to Cousin Eddie, cousin Eddie, so good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and when? When? Hopefully. You see what a tremendous waste of time. The resources was yeah, grace, grace, she's been dead for years. She died 30 years ago.
Speaker 1:The blessing, it's so good. Wrapped up, our damn cat. We have that ornament and it plays that whole scene. It's so funny. I'm drooling on myself. I'm drooling on myself. That's so good, yeah.
Speaker 1:But yeah, christmas story, we just started watching it. The kids love it. Cora, oh, are they into it now? Yes, cora, the four-year-old, she goes. Can we watch the movie with the slide where they put them down the slide? And I'm like Christmas Story With the one with the slide where they send him down the slide. I'm like with the freaky Santa that sells You'll shoot your eye out, kid. It's so good. There are a lot of quotable moments in that one too, I suppose.
Speaker 1:But for me, these movies it's the feeling I get from what. It's a physical feeling. I don't know what that, if it's nostalgia, I think nostalgia is a physical feeling Like this is a physical feeling as it goes down my gullet, pour it down your face, summerfield Down your face. Oh, it's so good. But those movies I think that's why we like movies and I think Christmas it's such a.
Speaker 1:You know, maybe for some people it's not, but you know what? This isn't church. I'm not going to talk about the people that have a hard time. We're going to talk about the good stuff. Uh, I'm having a hard time relating those comments, but it's a lot happening in my head, but it's it's just the nostalgia of it, all you know, and that's the section of the podcast we should probably just cut it.
Speaker 1:I don't know what that was, I'm gonna leave it. I don't even care. That was, I'm going to leave it. I don't even care. I know you're going to leave it, but it's the yeah, the feeling Like you get watching it. It's like it brings you. I think it's because it brings you back to that time and that's why the Santa Claus you know memories with my mom and all that stuff Sure Comes back and Sure, I think, retire, I will be a santa claus. I think that will be one of the things I do. Yeah, I mean grow the beard out and, uh, luckily you get to wear a hat, thankfully, because I'm bald, almost I'm gonna probably shave my head again. Sorry, I had to, I had to, I don't even care. Like, like once an episode, I'm gonna make fun of your and I think it's good. It keeps me humble. Yeah, yeah, any other Christmas movies? Oh, because we're going to talk Miracle on 34th Street. I do like that one. I do like that one. I like the newer one with Richard Attenborough.
Speaker 1:Can I tell you a movie that is a classic Christmas movie that I have actually never. Well, white Christmas, I love. Tell you a movie that, like, is a classic christmas movie that I have actually never. Well, white christmas, I love. But what were you gonna? I love it. What were you gonna say, no, let's keep going. No, you gotta tell me what you. Just you can't tee it up.
Speaker 1:It's a bad movie, isn't it? Is it game of thrones? That's not a christmas movie, that's a movie with body parts and dragons I have never seen, from Start to Finish. It's a Wonderful Life. Okay, all right, let me just say, let me be clear. Throwback to Rajiv. Remember that, rajiv. Let me be clear, president Obama, it's a Wonderful Life.
Speaker 1:I don't know why I forgot that is one of the best movies. It's my father-in-law's favorite. I love that. You've never seen the best movies. It's my father-in-law's favorite. I love that. You've never seen it. Dude, let's watch it. It's so good, what is it about it, that you don't want to watch it? For me it is.
Speaker 1:I think I grew up in a time. I hate your excuse, just kidding, go ahead. I grew up in a time. I grew up in a time when. Do you remember like the big joke was every time you turn on the TV between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, it's on. It's on, yeah, but that's a Christmas channel. Well, christmas stories. It doesn't matter what network you're looking at, it doesn't matter the time of day. It's in Home Alone, it's a Christmas channel. It doesn't matter what network you're looking at, it doesn't matter the time of day. It's in Home Alone, it's always there. It's even in Home Alone. The first one, I know.
Speaker 1:The point there is that it was so overplayed. You saw bits and pieces of it. Yeah, of course, but I never really watched the whole thing, watched the whole thing and it got to the point where it got to the point where the the fact that I had gone as long as I had without actually seeing it's just embarrassing. Absolute cult classic, if you will. Really, it's not even a cult, it's a popular classic.
Speaker 1:I haven't seen mad max, of which, like me neither, but like it's one of those things that, like you, had to have been sleeping under a rock, living under a rock, whatever the saying is to not have seen this movie at least once in your life. Right, collectively that I became, I decided that you know what if I've made it this long now you're just solidarity, you're just holding out. I've I've never seen the titanic. For the same, oh my gosh. Well, you're better off for the same reason is because everybody else has seen it in the world. I may be the only we've talked about this. I may be the only person my age who hasn't seen the titanic. And you are like, at this point, it's kind of like a. There's sort of like a man. Yeah, some clout there, I think I've never seen.
Speaker 1:It's a wonderful life, but like what I think with that, I certainly know the jokes, right, but now you're right, it's funny because if you, if you turn on tbs, I want to marry, I want to, I want a big one, what do you want the? I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down far. Are you talking about the honeymooners? I don't know what you're talking about here, but it's funny because you're right. If you were to turn on TBS, they play the Christmas story 24 hours. I feel, yeah, christmas Day, right, just back to back to back to back to back. Yeah, it's a great movie, almost kind of.
Speaker 1:That was made in 83. I looked that up Right, which is kind of funny. I was negative two. Yeah, based in Chicago, filmed in Cleveland. I thought it was based in Ohio. No, I mean, well, I guess it could. Could be, it's one of the southern suburbs. It's not cleveland, I can tell you. That's where the uh bears.
Speaker 1:But the burst, what would? What would it mean for you to watch? It's a wonderful life, like let titanic, let that be the thing. You never see, that you're fine, I, I'm probably fine there. Look, I'll tell you. Uh, you know, she had room on the door. That's all I got to say. Jack, he could have survived. There was plenty of space on the door, but she just a selfish jerk. That's all you need to know. Um, uh, but it's a wonderful life. And color. I like the color version, even though it's color. Is there a difference? Yeah, there's color versus black and white, but it is such a good.
Speaker 1:Bert and Ernie, that's where that comes from, really. Yeah, I love Bert and Ernie. Yeah, it comes from the. Yes, I would never have known. There's a police officer and a cab driver named Bert and Ernie. Huh, comes from that, as far as I know.
Speaker 1:Maybe I need to watch it now.
Speaker 1:It's really good. What do you want? You want the moon? I'll throw a lasso around and pull it down for you. If the moon were made of hair, would you eat it? Now we're talking about Harry Caray. If the moon were made of cheese, would you eat it? I would Wash it down with an ice, cold butter wash. How do I carry you? Holy cow, holy cow, how do I? I don't know. I think I'm going to hold out a little bit longer. I haven't, I haven't. If you watch it, you gotta let me know. I'll watch it with you, will you? It's a good movie. It just seems like it's so long. That's not that long, no, no, it's like a regular movie. Jingle all the way. Let's just name. Let's, let's just a spitball round. Okay, okay, jingle all the way. Now you go. This is the worst spitball round I've ever seen. I wasn't prepared. Oh right, yeah, so we're going off. The cuff, just Christmas. What would you like? Yeah, just what you would like? Reindeer games. Oh, the cuff, just Christmas. What would you like? Reindeer games? Oh, okay, all right. Santa Claus 2. Well, no, go ahead In order of like. Oh, I would watch these. Would be my order. I would watch these. Maybe not in order, but I would watch these in Christmas time. This is awful, I'm terrible at this game. Home Alone 2. This is awful, I'm terrible at this game. Home Alone 2. Come on, or are we going with, like, yeah, any of them? Okay, home Alone 2. Home Alone 2. Mm-hmm Well, you talked about Miracle 34 Street. You talked about Christmas Vacation. Mm-hmm, charlie Brown Christmas. Yeah, absolutely. Oh, the Grinch. The Jim Car, it's charlie brown christmas. Yeah, um, oh, the grinch, the jim carrey grinch. I do like that man. The grinches are good. Yeah, I like, I like the. I like the original, the cartoon grinch, absolutely fantastic. With the dog, yeah, yep, yep, hysterical, um, I even like the new one. It's not that bad. Frosty the snowman was frosty. Yep, all the claymations, all the claymations, yeah, so specifically with that, santa claus is coming to town. Okay, you're without a santa claus. I don't remember those two as much. Those are like the. Santa claus is coming to town is like the origin story of santa. It's really good, it's. If you're gonna watch any of them, that's the one to watch. Of course, you comic book hero fan would go after the origin story. I love a good origin story. Santa claus origin story, uh, I mean frosty the frosty the snowman and rudolph the red-headed reindeer like those two. I need to watch those this year are pretty good.
Speaker 1:Here's one you may have not heard of. This freaks out stella still she's 10. She's still a free job. It's called the snowman. Stella still she's 10. She's still a free-top. It's called the Snowman.
Speaker 1:That was kind of like the weird horror story type of no, no, no, it was like a cartoon, not to horror, but yeah, yeah, yeah, it was just this weird. It was no dialogue, it was just the snowman that takes his kid on a flight throughout the world and I just remember that's the song. Uh, there's that polar express, polar express, and that the teeth, the teeth. It is weird, uh, yeah, um, I can see that. Oh, what the heck we were. Uh, snowman frosty. Oh, what the heck was it? There was another one oh, jack frost. Oh, michael keaton. Yeah, sorry about christmas. That was good, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:I don't know, do you put the Nightmare Before Christmas? Oh, holiday in Handcuffs. Why could I? Hallmark Holiday in Handcuffs? Yeah, that's a good. Okay, well, hold on Before we get into the Hallmark movies, because I think that's a thing I think we need to talk about it. Oh my gosh. Okay, moment of silence for all the creativity that was lost during every release of every Hallmark movie ever made.
Speaker 1:Can I tell you, if you're looking for mindless Entertainment, christmas holiday, festive entertainment, the hallmark movies this christmas, that's a good one, that's a good one. How about four christmases? Yes, four christmases. Elf, uh, home alone one, two, elf, yeah, yeah, I mean. Oh, so we're naming even the ones that we already named. Sure, I'll just throw them out there. Elf is really good.
Speaker 1:I liked it the first few times I saw it. It was. After that it wasn't. I mean, die Hard is just the classic Christmas, off-the-cuff Christmas movie. I think it's the ultimate there. It's more of a Thanksgiving movie really, but Planes, trains and Automobiles I love. Yeah, it's so good. It's a good holiday movie. I need to watch it. Holiday Anytime.
Speaker 1:We get into those holiday movies, though I do start getting into the Bonds, like the James Bond version. Yeah, holiday To me. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I can get into Bond quite a bit. Goldeneye was on the other day at the gym, was it? I watched it. Yeah, probably because we're Treadmill 8.5 incline. Probably because we're just after Thanksgiving. I see what you did there. You know what I'm saying. You know what else is after Thanksgiving, christmas.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm deep frying a turkey this year, by the way, by the way, I mean, I deep fried a turkey this year Right right For Thanksgiving or Christmas, because turkey and Christmas is. People do ham for Christmas. I don't know why. What do you do for Christmas? What are you doing in a couple weeks?
Speaker 1:I want to do duck. You know what? I'm totally in on that. I have three ducks in my yard. If you want to, should we do a duck? Should we each do a duck? Can I have one? I'll pay you for it. No, I'm dead serious. I'm serious right now. Give me one of your ducks. Give me your duck, man. I'm sorry, amy, but I need this duck. I need this. You can't say I need this, I need this. You can't say I need this.
Speaker 1:What about deep fried duck? Oh heck, yeah, deep fried the turkey. It's the best I've tried for 10 years. I deep fried a turkey like 10 years ago. Yeah, no, maybe 15 years ago.
Speaker 1:It was amazing, best thing ever. It was a Creole injected deep fried turkey. It was amazing To a T. I did it. Elton Brown, best food teacher ever. I followed it exactly. I did it perfectly. It was the best thing I've ever had.
Speaker 1:There was nothing left. I've been trying for years. I've tried every single possible recipe of turkey, every different chef. Nothing is compared. Single possible recipe of turkey yeah, every different chef. Nothing is compared To that. Deep fried turkey Nope.
Speaker 1:This year, freaking bought a deep fryer. I bought the oil. Yeah, it was impulse buy and delicious and it was freaking amazing. Yeah, I love that. I love that. I wish I would have gotten a bite of it, frankly. But, like you mentioned, nothing is left. Nothing's left. It's hard to do that.
Speaker 1:18-pound turkey that's awesome. We had three people here. That's awesome. It includes me. 18 pounds, I want a duck. That's roughly six pounds a person. Yeah, I want a duck man.
Speaker 1:I wonder if we could. Can you actually kill one of your ducks? I wonder if we could do it. Well, I mean, they're not producing eggs right now. Are they edible ducks? I mean, aren't all, I guess? I think typically it's like the big white ones. That's what we have. We have three big white ones. Oh my gosh. Yeah, you have two big white ones, right? No, yeah, you totally have two For sure. You've only had two ever, ever. I think you're trying to hone in on my ducks here. Oh my God. Well, this has been a great episode. This was fun. Yeah, I'm looking forward to.
Speaker 1:Oh, I just remembered the other Christmas movies. I liked what Scrooged, oh, yes, with Bill Murray. Yes, christmas Carol Fantastic. But the alternate version with Bill Murray it's not one I typically.
Speaker 1:I'm not a Nightmare Before Christmas guy. You were going to ask that before. That's a Halloween movie in my opinion. I don't like it. I'm not a big fan either. Like the only tim burton stuff. I'm not a huge fan of james and the giant peach. I like okay, I don't know if that's tim burton, I think it might it is.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I like that one. I like beel juice, sure, but not I'm not a fan of it's. Uh, the nightmare for christmas yeah, it doesn't do anything for me. Okay, that's totally fair. But Scrooge, that was the one that I watched a ton. That was great. I remember watching it all the time.
Speaker 1:I do like the George C Scott Christmas Carol yeah, what was the? Did Jim Carrey? Did Jim Carrey do one? That was the one. It was animated yeah, that was really good. I liked it.
Speaker 1:I saw it in theaters but it made me car sick in the theater. Oh, too much motion. Yeah, 3d, but it was good. Yeah, that was a good one. That was a good one, not as good as this. I mean, this is really good. I might have to pour a little bit more of this one.
Speaker 1:Go ahead, you can sleep in the couch. Do you want to do post? You want to do post show? What's a post show? We've never done a, we've never done additional content like after the show, but maybe we should start. Let's do it. I wonder if we're still rolling. Hey, thanks Phil. Early Merry Christmas. I'll tell you that again in the next episode and probably the episode after that and even after that and probably even after that, and then we'll be into Happy New Year and then it's a whole thing. But it's like it's Christmas. It's a whole thing, you know. Thanks Matt, thanks Phil. Bye-bye Next time on Whiskey Bits.
Speaker 1:As adults, it's all about the kids getting the gifts Right. That is more fun than I thought it would be. I'll be honest. Yeah, that is a knitted Santa hat. Well, when it is your turn to tell me what you want for Christmas, oh, but I thought you don't want people touching your thighs. You could never be Santa. You could sit there, I could sit there, you could sit there. What if I sat there and like started like no moving around around on it not happening? Like, uh, how does it look? I think it looks pretty good actually. Yeah, dude, that's why I put the hat on your side and I gave myself the stocking, because I want the gift. You give the gift. You're saying I see, hey, thanks for tuning in to Whiskey Bits. Please like, share and subscribe wherever you watch or listen to podcasts.
